Pieces are carefully prepared for firing and are taken from the kiln to begin the decorative process. Strands of horsehair are placed, by hand, onto the hot pottery immediately after firing as the material cools quickly. The horsehair burns off leaving lines and smoke patterns creating unique pieces that cannot be duplicated through the same process. Once the pieces are cleaned and sealed carbonaceous patterns are enhanced, creating the final product.
The design is outlined in advance as a general concept, the horsehair application process will influence the shape and size that creates the lines and smoke patterns for the final product.
